Sea Captains' Burial Ground

Follow the Sea Captains' Burial Ground Footpath on the Fundy Trail and you'll find your way to two family burial grounds. The Fownes and Melvin families were some of the original settlers in this area. They were both big shipbuilding families with captains who sailed all around the world - including Europe, India, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific coast of the United States. More than 45 are buried in the two restored cemeteries. If you do the loop, it's about a 1km hike.

Trip Highlights

The Fownes and Melvin families settled along Bay of Fundy even before the Quaco – St. Martins settlement in 1783. They were shipbuilding families, building 32 ships between 1820 and 1864.


They were also captains of vessels. They sailed the world from the Bay of Fundy to Europe, Africa, India, Australia and the Pacific coast of the United States. They married, raised their families, died and more that 45 are buried in these two restored cemeteries.
